The maritime industry is shifting towards Low sulphur Fuel Oils (LSFO). Â This includes Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oils and Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oils. Â While these fuels offer environmental benefits, they present challenges when spilled into the marine environment.
The characteristics of these oils is different to traditional oils and different technology is therefore required when selecting a skimmer to recover LSFO.
Komara Omni has been developed in response to the changing needs of LSFOs, where traditional oil recovery oil skimmers are not effective. Â Vikoma was selected to join the IMAROS2 project through which Komara Omni has undergone thorough trials to recover a range of low to ultra-low sulphur fuel oils with an impressive recovery performance.
Unique technology has been developed to optimise the oil skimmer performance and efficiency.
It has a unique power tilt designed to enable the height of the brush to be adjusted to suit the oil.
It also has a very manoeuvrable thruster system, giving the operator easy control to position the skimmer for optimal recovery of the oil. Â This is essential for the recovery of these new-generation oils which have different characteristics to traditional oils.
It’s unique V Brush recovers LSFOs with very low free water pick up.
For ultimate flexibility and to provide a cost-effective solution to recover traditional oils as well as the LSFO’s, Komara Omni can be supplied with a complete range of interchangeable recovery modules, which includes discs, star discs and regular brushes for the recovery of traditional oils.

Komara Omni is our most flexible skimmer, capable of recovering a range of new generation low sulphur
fuel oils as well as traditional oil.

V Brush module : Vikoma has developed it’s unique V brush which effectively recovers low, very low &
ultra low sulphur fuel oils with very low free water content.
Star Disc module : Developed by Vikoma, the Star Disc recovers heavy viscous oils combining the principles of disc skimming with mechanical recovery.
Regular Brush module : Suited to medium viscosity, traditional oil recovery.
Oleophilic Disc module : High efficiency recovery (98% oil content) for light to medium oils.
